The time is 207 B. C. At the wild hilly site of Gaixia, the Chu king Xiang Yu, leading his small troop, is ominously surrounded by the large army of his arch-rival, Liu Bang of the Han. Despite a brilliant fight Xiang Yu puts up, he is so outnumbered that he has to retreat and barely makes it back to his headquarters.
In his encampment, King Xiang recounts the humiliating battle to his favorite imperial consort, Lady Yu. Yu tries to console him by serving him some wine. And then, seeing how exhausted he is, she implores him to lie down a bit. As he retires to the back camp, she goes for a walk under the desolate moonlight to ease her own mind.
As she strolls along, she hears singing from the Han encampment, which, much to her surprise, was not of the Han, but the Chu songs. She hurries back to report this to her king. At the news, Xiang realizes that his front line has been totally broken down, and that he and the small army accompanying him are now alone facing destruction. Lady Yu tries to reassure him that he can still beat the enemy, but his anxiety soon turns to despair when one of his generals comes with a message from the enemy leader predicting Xiang’s imminent defeat and death.
In her attempt to distract him from the dire situation with some entertainment, Yu performs her famous sword dance. When the dance is finished, the Han army is reported to be quickly approaching.
